The Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE) at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has named
Luca Daniel, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering,
and Jing Kong, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering,
to receive 2008 Jonathan Allen Junior Faculty Awards.
Professor Daniel's research interests include parameterized
model order reduction of linear and nonlinear dynamical
systems; mixed-signal, RF and mm-wave circuit design
and robust optimization; power electronics, MEMs design
and fabrication; parasitic extraction and accelerated
integral equation solvers. He received the Laurea degree
summa cum laude in Electronic Engineering from the
Universita di Padova, Italy, in 1996, and his
Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University
of California, Berkeley, in 2003. Professor Daniel
joined RLE and the MIT faculty in 2003.
Professor Kong's research interests focus on the problem
of combining the synthesis and fabrication of individual
carbon nanotubes, and integrating them into electrical
circuits. Applications of her research include the
use of carbon nanotubes as extremely sensitive chemical
sensors to detect toxic gases. She received the B.S
in chemistry from Peking University in 1997 and the
Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University in 2002.
Professor Kong joined RLE and the MIT faculty 2004.
Jeffrey H.
Shapiro, Julius A. Stratton Professor of
Electrical Engineering and RLE Director, said, "Professors
Daniel and Kong are superb examples of the new generation
of RLE faculty who are pushing the boundaries of our
understanding of nature and our ability to apply that
understanding to important human problems. I am
delighted that the Allen Award can provide additional
support at an especially exciting point in their MIT
faculty careers."
The award is named in honor of Jonathan Allen, Professor
of Electrical Engineering in the Department of Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science. Professor Allen was
the sixth Director RLE, and served in that capacity
until his death in 2000. Professor Collin M. Stultz
was the 2007 recipient of the Allen Award.
