Q:
How do I connect a computer to the RLE network?
Q: How do I report and resolve an MIT network problem?
Q: How do I get an MIT IP address within the RLE
network?
Q: How do I get computer hardware, client/server
implementation, and software help?
A: All connections to the RLE network must be cleared
with the
Assistant
Director for Information Technology Services prior to installation. Under no circumstances should
connections be made to existing cabling nor should
repeaters or other networking devices be added to the
network without prior approval. We reserve the right
to disconnect any devices attached to any network port
at any time. The system must be located behind one
of the RLE owned Ethernet switches located in these
buildings. The system must be properly connected to
the network using industry accepted hardware and attachment
methods. The machine and its attachment must meet all
Ethernet/IEEE specifications. Physical connection of
the machine must be made by a member of RLE.
A: Since RLE is responsible for the network topology
we are best suited to do problem resolution on our
internal network. Do not call network operations
regarding any network issue without first discussing
the issue with us. Contact the Assistant
Director for Information Technology Services.
A: All requests for internet addresses should be made
to the Assistant Director for Information Technology
Services[link]. The following information is needed
to obtain an IP address: a unique name for the machine;
location of the machine (building and room number);
manufacturer of the machine (i.e., Dell, Apple, Sun,
etc.); operating system running on the machine (i.e.,
UNIX, LINUX, Windows XP); name of the person who
is responsible for the machine; and how the machine
is connected to the RLE network, including who cabled
the machine.
A: Contact the Network
and Systems Specialist.
